Medicines and Emerging Science

Introduction

A key objective of the EMEA is to make safe and effective medicines available to patients. Better medicines should reach the market in a timely manner, and need to be evaluated using state-of-the-art methods.

In this part of the EMEA website you will find information on activities at the EMEA to support scientifically sound development of new therapies and technologies.

One of the goals of the long-term strategy of the Agency — the EMEA Road Map to 2010 — is to foster research and innovation uptake in the development of pharmaceuticals.

In this context, an 'EMEA/CHMP think-tank group on innovative drug development' was set up, comprising EMEA staff and several members of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use and its various working parties.

The work of the think-tank focused on identifying scientific bottlenecks and emerging science in the development of medicines— both in industry's R&D and in the academic environment — and on generating recommendations for future EMEA actions.

To further contribute to this objective, the EMEA established the Innovation Task Force (ITF), a multidisciplinary group that includes scientific, regulatory and legal competences and that ensures EMEA-wide coordination in the areas of interest, and which provides a forum for early dialogue with applicants.
