18 November 2009 is European Antibiotic Awareness Day

Published 18/11/2009

The European Antibiotic Awareness Day provides an annual opportunity for raising awareness about the threat to public health of antibiotic resistance and about how to use antibiotics responsibly.

This Awareness Day is initiated by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), with whom the European Medicines Agency has recently worked on two antimicrobial resistance related projects. The results of these projects emphasise the importance of the judicious use of antibiotics in the treatment of human and animal bacterial infections.

A joint report on the gap between bacterial resistance in the European Union and the availability of new treatments against multidrug-resistant bacteria.

A scientific opinion on antimicrobial resistance focused on infections transmitted to humans from animals and food (zoonoses).
